Dr. Steven Darling serves as Assistant Professor of Tuba & Euphonium at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Tubist with the UTM Faculty Brass Quintet. An award-winning performer, Darling has garnered recognition in over a dozen competitions including the Leonard Falcone Tuba Artist, ITEC Euphonium Artist, and the American Prize in Instrumental Performance. In 2018, Darling made his debut Carnegie appearance at the Weill Recital Hall, and release his debut award-winning album Dualities, on the Emeritus Label. Darling released his second album award-winning album, American Landscape, in 2020.

An active performer, Darling has appeared as a guest soloist with numerous ensemble throughout the United States including the Ohio University Wind Symphony, Wisconsin Youth Wind Ensemble, Cincinnati Conservatory Brass Band, and the Cincinnati Brass Band. Recently, Darling performed Michael Daugherty’s Reflections on the Mississippi with the Mason Wind Symphony at the National Concert Band Festival and again at WINDFEST!, at Cincinnati’s Music Hall. In 2019, Steven premiered his work At the Mountains of Madness for Tuba and String Orchestra with the Wright State University Chamber Orchestra. In 2019, Darling served as Guest Principal Tubist with the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, in addition to regularly performing with orchestras throughout the Midwest and South.

Darling frequently appears as an artist-in-residence at conferences and universities throughout the United States, and an adjudicator for state, regional, and international competitions. An active clinician, Darling has given lectures for the Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee Music Educator Associations, served on a discussion panel at the 2019 ITEC, frequently serves as a master clinician at universities and high schools throughout the United States, and appeared as a guest soloist and chamber musician at the Northwest, Southeast, Midwest, and International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences. Steven’s original compositions are frequently performed at regional and international tuba-euphonium conferences, The United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, ClarinetFest, and numerous universities. Darling’s Concert Piece No. 1 was selected as a required work for the semi-final round of the Falcone and ITEA Euphonium Artist and Regional ITEA Euphonium Artist Competitions.

Darling’s students have won positions with the United States Army Bands, garnered recognition in various regional and international competitions, gained acceptance to prestigious institutions, and serve as educators in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Darling primarily studied with Marty Erickson, Jason Smith, and Timothy Northcut.
