Andrew’s orchestral career began in South Africa, where he held positions with the National Orchestra of South Africa and the Transvaal Chamber Orchestra. Since winning the position in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra he continues to perform as a member of the contemporary ensemble Stroma, contributing to a wide range of innovative and modern repertoire. As a soloist, Andrew has appeared at major international festivals and conferences, including the International Tuba Conferences in Sydney, where he premiered new works, and has toured internationally as a featured performer with symphonic wind ensembles. A career highlight includes performing as soloist for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Ross Harris’s Labyrinth, a performance that earned an APRA Award. His solo career reflects both technical excellence and a commitment to expanding the repertoire for low brass instruments. In addition to performance, Andrew has built an extensive and influential career in music education. He has held senior academic and leadership roles including Head of Brass at the New Zealand School of Music and lecturer positions at leading institutions such as the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Over many years, he has contributed to the development of young musicians through his work with numerous Youth Orchestra programmes, as well as international youth festivals in China, Australia, and beyond. His teaching philosophy combines technical mastery with musical creativity, and many of his students have gone on to successful professional careers in Europe and Australia. These include an APRA Award for performance, major international scholarships, and awards for musical leadership and community contribution.
