Dr. Steve Call
Educator, Soloist

Dr. Steve Call has been a member of the Music Faculty at Brigham Young University since 1979 where he is a Professor of Music. He teaches courses in tuba and euphonium performance, jazz piano, jazz studies, and directs the BYU Jazz Legacy Band. As a soloist, he has presented guest recitals and concerto performances throughout the United States. His solo performance of Tubby the Tuba for solo tuba, narrator and orchestra was released on CD as part of Macmillan-McGraw Hill’s Share the Music series. Call has performed with a variety of jazz and chamber groups throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. He has served as Principal Euphonium with Utah Premiere Brass and Principal Tuba with the Wintergreen Summer Festival Orchestra in Virginia. He currently plays euphonium with the Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band of Colorado, contrabass saxhorn (American Civil War-era tuba) with Yankee Brass Band of New England, and tuba with the New Hot 5 Jazz Band in the USA and France. His music video, “Jazz for Cows” has over 7.5 million views on YouTube, and has the most views of any modern “Dixieland Jazz Band” on that website. A crusader for the tuba in jazz, Call has published numerous articles and reviews on jazz tuba and is the author of two chapters on the tuba in jazz and commercial music that appear in The Tuba Source Book, published by Indiana University Press.
