Born in Humacao, Puerto Rico... raised in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. Emily Sierra plays many instruments, specializing in the saxophone. The Alto Saxophone is her principal instrument, although her first instrument learned was the classic guitar. Her first studies in music was at Escuela Libre de Musica in Humacao, Puerto Rico; in which she started her studies in saxophone. Since she was so advanced in her instrument, the saxophone professor admitted her as a second saxophone player at the Humacao Municipal Symphony and marching Band, having the experience of participating in concerts in Venezuela, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico at the age of 15. Also began performing on popular television shows in Puerto Rico at the age of 17. Emily plays with famous Latin artists, touring national acts, performances in churches, theaters, musicals and local bands. Her style and skills are eclectic: Gospel, Motown, Salsa, Merengue, Rock, Jazz, Psychedelic Tribal and more!
Emily has a Bachelor's Degree in Saxophone Performance from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and a Master's Degree in Classical Saxophone from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, Ohio). Her vast performance experience includes playing with Freddy Kenton, Tito Puente Jr, The Temptations Review, Gilberto Santa Rosa, The Four Tops, Jose Alberto "el canario", The New York Band, Miriam Cruz, Lalo Rodriguez, Nino Segarra, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, among other artists. She has also done musical recordings for several Latin Music artists and Gospel Christian artists. Her most difficult challenges has been to be accepted and welcomed as a female professional saxophone player by an environment of mostly male musicians and performers.
Emily’s music and energy defy bounds and limits. She was the first student (and first female) to obtain a degree in her chosen discipline Saxophone Performance from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music since Saxophone was incorporated as a classical instrument for the saxophone studies program on that year. Emily is passionate about playing music. She also dances and is skilled in Latin percussion and background vocals.
